Cribyn 2025-2026 - Our Learning Journey
Croeso i Cribyn Class, a vibrant mixed Reception and Year 1 group nestled in the heart of the beautiful Wye Valley. Our school grounds and stunning surroundings provide endless opportunities for exploration and learning.
We follow the Curriculum for Wales, which places learners at the centre of everything we do. Our approach is hands-on and experiential, helping children develop the four purposes of the curriculum.
We love using the outdoors, whatever the weather, for all areas of learning, and we also enjoy a dedicated Forest School session each week. Outdoor learning is a key part of our ethos, encouraging curiosity, resilience, and a love of nature.
Our class is special because we have a positive attitude to learning, and every child’s voice matters. In Cribyn, children are at the centre of their learning journey, supported to explore, question, and grow in confidence.

Autumn Apples
We have an orchard on site. We had apples everywhere! We used our home-grown apples to learn about recipes and write instructions, which led to making our very own apple crumble.
Co-operation
Incorporating our value-based education into learning. Working together!
Outdoor Art
We learnt how to use watercolours to create beautiful paintings of the Autumn leaves that we had collected and sorted into colour and size.
Wreath Making
Using willow and natural materials to create these beautiful autumnal wreaths.
PE
In PE, we visited the Far East through movement. We became koi carp in the pond, developing spatial awareness, learning to move safely in tight spaces, change direction, control our bodies and be aware of others so we did not bump into anyone.
Chinese Food Tasting
As part of our learning about Chinese culture, we used chopsticks to taste Chinese food. We recorded what we liked and did not like using Welsh "Wyt ti i'n hoffi?", then used our results to create a graph so we could see which food was the most popular.
Curriculum Highlights
Culture and Celebration – Spring Term Learning
This term, our learning has focused on Culture and Celebration, helping the children to explore traditions, languages and celebrations from Wales and the wider world.
We have been learning about Welsh culture and celebrations, including special days such as St Dwynwen’s Day and St David’s Day. The children explored Welsh symbols, songs and language, and are growing in confidence using Welsh phrases with their friends and at home.
We also learned about Chinese culture and Chinese New Year, discovering how this celebration is marked through food, music, dance and symbols. As part of this, the children took part in food tasting experiences, listened to music and learned about traditional celebrations in China.
Throughout the term, we have compared different cultures, discussing how people celebrate in different ways and what makes each culture special. The children explored flags, symbols and traditions, and were encouraged to share their own experiences of celebrations from home and family life.
This topic has supported the children to develop curiosity, respect and understanding, helping them recognise similarities and differences while celebrating diversity within our school community and beyond.
